Chevy Chase, Maryland can trace the origin of its name to the famous 1388 Battle of Chevy Chase. The dispute began as a border quarrel over hunting grounds or a “chase” in the Cheviot Hills.
The Battle between the Scots, led by the Earl of Douglas and the English, led by Lord Harry “Hotspur” Percy, was brutal and relentless. As the night fell, the battle evolved into a number of hand-to-hand single combats.
Percy was captured, and although the Scots prevailed, Douglas was killed as were many of the troops.
